What is Brufen?

Brufen is a brand name for Ibuprofen, a medicine belonging to the Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) class. It is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and fever in various conditions such as arthritis, headache, muscle pain, and toothache. Brufen is available in different forms — tablets, syrup (for children), and suspension.

How It Works

Brufen (Ibuprofen) works by:

    • Blocking cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, which are responsible for producing prostaglandins — chemicals that cause pain, inflammation, and fever.

    • By reducing prostaglandin production, it relieves pain, reduces swelling, and lowers body temperature.

Uses

Brufen is used to treat a wide range of painful and inflammatory conditions, including:

    • Headache and migraine

    • Toothache

    • Menstrual cramps (period pain)

    • Muscle pain and back pain

    • Joint pain and arthritis (Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis)

    • Fever (due to infection or other causes)

    • Post-surgical pain or injury-related pain

Side Effects

Common side effects (usually mild and temporary):

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Stomach pain, acidity, or heartburn

  • Dizziness or headache

  • Diarrhea or constipation

Serious (rare) side effects:

  • Stomach ulcers or bleeding

  • Liver or kidney problems (with long-term use)

  • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)

  • Increased blood pressure

Precautions

  • Avoid if you have stomach ulcers, asthma, kidney/liver disease, or heart problems.

  • Do not take Brufen with other NSAIDs (like Aspirin or Diclofenac).

  • Avoid alcohol — it increases the risk of stomach bleeding.

  • Pregnant women (especially in the 3rd trimester) should avoid Ibuprofen unless prescribed.

  • Elderly patients should use with caution due to increased risk of side effects.
