what is Follicular Unit Transplantation ?

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), also known as the strip method, is one of the oldest and most commonly used hair transplant techniques. In this procedure, a thin strip of scalp is surgically removed from the back or sides of the head (the donor area), where hair growth is usually permanent. The strip is then carefully dissected under a microscope into individual follicular units, which are implanted into the bald or thinning areas of the scalp.

Procedure

A strip of scalp (typically 6–10 inches long) is surgically removed from the donor site. The wound is then stitched, leaving behind a linear scar. The strip is divided into hundreds or thousands of follicular units under high magnification. These grafts are implanted into tiny incisions in the recipient area, ensuring natural-looking growth.

Limitations of FUT

Linear Scar: Leaves a visible scar in the donor area, which may be noticeable with short hairstyles. Longer Recovery Time: Healing takes more time compared to FUE or DHI. Discomfort: Post-surgery tightness or discomfort in the donor area may occur. Less Popular Today: Many patients prefer scar-free and advanced options like FUE and DHI.
