What is Amoxicillin?

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that belongs to the Penicillin group of medicines. It works by killing or stopping the growth of bacteria that cause infections. Amoxicillin is highly effective against a wide range of bacterial infections, including those affecting the ear, throat, lungs, urinary tract, and skin.

Mechanism of Action (How It Works)

Amoxicillin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It prevents bacteria from forming the protective wall that is essential for their survival — leading to their death (bactericidal action).

Uses

Amoxicillin is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including:

  • Respiratory tract infections (such as bronchitis, pneumonia)
  • Throat infections (like tonsillitis and pharyngitis)
  • Ear infections (otitis media)
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Dental infections / tooth abscesses
