What is Clarithromycin?

Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria that cause infections in the respiratory tract, skin, ears, sinuses, and stomach. It’s not effective against viral infections (like the common cold or flu).

    • Injection (IV form) – used in hospitals

Uses / Indications

Clarithromycin is used to treat:

  • Respiratory infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia)

  • Throat infections (pharyngitis, tonsillitis)

  • Sinus infections (sinusitis)

  • Ear infections (otitis media)

  • Skin and soft tissue infections

  • Stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori (as part of combination therapy)

  • Mycobacterial infections (especially in HIV patients)

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea, vomiting

  • Stomach pain, diarrhea

  • Headache, dizziness

  • Altered taste (metallic taste)

Less Common / Serious:

  • Allergic reaction (rash, swelling, itching)

  • Liver problems (yellowing of eyes/skin)

  • Irregular heartbeat (QT prolongation)

  • Hearing loss (temporary, rare)
