Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) — a medicine that helps relieve and prevent symptoms of asthma and allergic rhinitis (hay fever). It works by blocking substances in the body called leukotrienes, which cause inflammation, swelling, and tightening of airways.

Uses

Montelukast is used for:

    • Asthma (long-term control) – to prevent wheezing and shortness of breath

    • Allergic rhinitis – for seasonal or year-round allergies

    • Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction – prevents breathing problems during physical activity

    • Allergic skin reactions (sometimes used off-label)

Dosage

  • Adults (≥15 years): 10 mg once daily in the evening

  • Children (6–14 years): 5 mg chewable tablet once daily

  • Children (2–5 years): 4 mg chewable tablet or granules once daily
