what is Omeprazole ?

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) — a class of medicines that reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for treating acidity, heartburn, ulcers, and acid reflux (GERD). By lowering stomach acid levels, it helps heal the stomach and esophagus lining, reduces pain, and prevents further damage.

How Omeprazole Works (Mechanism of Action)

Inside the stomach lining, there are special cells called parietal cells that produce acid. Omeprazole works by blocking the enzyme “H⁺/K⁺ ATPase” (proton pump) in these cells. 👉 This enzyme is the final step in acid production. When it’s blocked, acid secretion drops significantly, making the stomach environment less acidic.

As a result:

  • Heartburn and acidity are relieved

  • Ulcers heal faster

  • Acid reflux symptoms are reduced

Uses / Indications

Omeprazole is prescribed for several acid-related stomach conditions:

  1. Acidity and Heartburn (Hyperacidity):
Provides quick relief from acid reflux and burning sensation in the chest.

  2. GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease):
Long-term treatment for acid reflux where stomach acid frequently flows back into the food pipe.

  3. Peptic and Duodenal Ulcers:
Helps heal ulcers in the stomach and small intestine caused by excess acid or H. pylori infection.

  4. Erosive Esophagitis:
Treats inflammation and irritation of the food pipe due to acid damage.

  5. Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome:
A rare condition with excessive acid production; Omeprazole helps control it.

  6. Prevention of Ulcers due to Painkillers (NSAIDs):
Reduces risk of stomach damage caused by long-term use of pain medicines like Diclofenac or Ibuprofen.
